Web 2.0

Om had this small post earlier today about Web 2.0. More than the post offered, it carried a slew of comments, taking their own definition of Web 2.0

Om mentioned in the post about VoIP and later on went to differentiate between the consumer VoIP and ‘click-to-call’ VoIP, which usually would be a via an intelligent Web app. Thats one domain where Web2.0 (?) can excel.

I am reminded of the leadership that Sun took years back about ‘Network is the computer’. Personally I see that same leadership driving Web2.0. For me, Web2.0 allows the users to forget about managing applications on their local systems, and leave that on services provided by Web applications and powered by Broadband connections that are fast becoming common.

Think of it as, what a typical home user does on their home PC. Take that outside their home PC and provide for the same application over the web, so it can be accessed from any PC (provided its connected to web). One good example is Meebo. Typical home user (& office user) has one or more IM apps running. Meebo takes this service out of the users PC and provides it over the web. This translates the web from being a source of information & a pipe for data sharing, to a application service provider.

Del-icio-us provided the breakthrough from local to web paradigm, letting users store their bookmarks online.

But for an application to do real justice to the term Web2.0 (and expectations it carries) it needs to have rich graphical user interface. The UI needs to be responsive, placing it apart from regular client-server-client transfers and refresh. AJAX comes in here as one major building block (at the moment) for applications geared towards Web2.0. Meebo again is a wonderful example of it.

I am not sure how Ojos is gonna be implemented, but if it in someway carries over some burden from the users local machine, to the web, it would be wonderful ! I for now suspect that Ojos users need to upload their pictures on to the web to get them tagged, but its too early for me to say anything about it.

Web 2.0 again is a wonderful opportunity for the VC community to revive the bubble. One good thing that comes out of this that the applications start moving towards the web rather than residing on local systems.

Bordered tab in IE7

Saturday, September 24th, 2005

Open IE7. Set focus by clicking on the ‘New Page’ tab. You should see the dotted focus rectangle on the tab. Resize the main IE window. Observe the tab now. Instead of the regular focus rectangle, the tab now has a solid border around it.

IE7

This doesnt happen if there are more than one tabs opened up in the window.

More IE7 fun

Thursday, September 22nd, 2005

Tonite, I was fiddling with the UI around the new tabbing scheme in IE7 by virtue of which you can have tabbed browsing in one IE window. Good so far (not great though). I started right clicking on the tab area and was actually looking for the tab context menu (Cloe/Close Other Tabs)…but then I stumbled upon this scenario:

IE7 context menu

This actually is the window context menu that appears when you right click (or even click) on the top left corner in the title bar of most of the windows. But as evident in the above screenshot, this also comes up when you click on the rectangle just below the title bar and above the tabs. This is the rectangle which holds the Back/Forward buttons, adress bar, refresh button etc. If you do a right click even in this area, you will get this context menu.

Now I might be missing the feature list, but is this by design? If yes, whats the value, as its not coming from a obvious location in the window. IF not, is this a documented bug? I know you guys from Microsoft are reading this, but would be good if we can hear something from someone in the comments.

Meebo RSA Encryption on IE7

Tuesday, September 20th, 2005

Meebo error

I was using IE7 to log into my GMail account moments ago. I was presented with this prompt by IE as soon as I hit Sign On. I have seen this prompt last night when I was trying ohdave’s RSA encryption in JavaScript. As soon as I try with 1024 bit RSA keys, IE would prompt this up and send the resources shooting up for this instance of IE. If I tried ohdave’s example with smaller precision of RSA keys, it usually worked.

Now Meebo also uses the same encryption, and I wonder is this the same problem. I am sure it is something new in IE7 and allows the browser to prompt up with a notice if the user wants to continue with the time-taking JavaScript routine.

If anyone from Meebo is reading this, can you leave a comment with any workaround or known issue related to this. That would be appreciated guys !

IE7 History browsing

Tuesday, September 20th, 2005

Last night I noticed something unusual in the Back & Forward buttons on top left corner in IE7. After a while of browsing history had developed, I went in to look for a particular page in the browsing history. As used to, I was looking for a small drop down menu on **both** the back & forward button, but I could spot it on only one of those buttons. It was the forward button. There was no drop down on the Back button.

Is this something thats to be fixed / known issue at the moment? Is this by design to reduce redundancy? If someone from the IE7 team is reading this, pls leave a comment if thats ok.

web 2.0 & meebo

Friday, September 16th, 2005

A month ago I was sitting with a friend of mine, and we were talking about things that people do from their home/work computers but at the same time they would want to do the same things from any place. Its like having your applications available over the internet and accessing them from anywhere.
One such example is how people use instant messaging. Its hard to believe when you walk in a cyber cafe and learn that your favorite IM client is not installed on the rented machine. In comes Meebo. Seth, Elaine & Sandy came up with this wonderful idea which certainly is a step towards Web 2.0.
Meebo is a web app to log into one of your fav IM clients. You have a choice of 4 IM clients (AIM, Yahoo,ICQ & MSN) to choose from. Its based on Ajax and does a pretty decent job in getting through to give you a nice experience. There were some questions raised about a 3rd party web site asking for your usernames and passwords, but looks like they are taking this seriously and getting compliant by getting certified by Verisign.
Nice job guys! Hope to see more feature pour in.

Motorola ROKR

ROKR iTunes
Would you believe thats the new piece of hardware which has Apple technology in it? This is I guess one of the oh-so-normal piece of hardware which has Apple technology in it. If you were excited wnough to watch the launching of this phone Steve Jobs did, you would understand. There were absolutely no excitement in the audience when ROKR was previewed officially. Well this could also be due to the fact that this was one of the worst kept secrets in recent times in technology world.
So whats inside ROKR. First, its called ‘rocker’ if you were wondering about ROKR.
It carries a iTunes client software which you can use to listen upto 100 songs that are stored in your phone. the iTunes client can be synched from your desktop using iTunes 5.0 which can detect the ROKR when connected via a USB cable. You just drag and drop your songs on the phone icon and there you are. 100 songs ready to be played in stereo. ROKR has stereo speakers which I have heard enhnaces the regular call quality also.

Is this something new? Well we all have been playing music on our phones. aint we? I have been bored of doing that on my Nokia Series 60 phone. Is the iTunes client capable of buying the songs online via the phone?

Over all it was a let down for all the fans waiting for this one since last one year.
