Netflix – improved recommendation system (?)

Friday, October 6th, 2006

Netflix recently launched the NetFlixPrize contest, where Netflix is looking to improve the recommedation system CineMatch they currently use to recommend movies to a returning customer based on his/her previous movie choices.

I say, its all good, as l-o-n-g  a-s  y-o-u  c-a-n  f-i-x the registration form issue.

I saw someone trying to fill out the form like 6 times, and it kept complaining about the ‘wrong confirmation text’ to the poor soul. On looking closer I could see that the confirmation text being entered was exactly the same as presented in the image. But still, no good!

Netfilx might first need to improve a basic web form, and then go after the Cinematch :)

IE7 Tabbing behaviour…continued.

Wednesday, March 22nd, 2006

I posted a shortcoming from the user perspective in IE7 Beta 1 here.

Strange enough this is still not implemented in IE7 Beta 2. Though this isnt a bug or something, but being one of the leading browsers (?) IE should have implemented this small behavior. Power users would certainly want the browser to remember the last tab when you close one of the tabs in the browser, instead of the browser pushing you to the first tab in the line.

Not good ! Someone pls get this into the feature requests bucket !

Google Video opens eases Bollywood piracy!

Saturday, January 14th, 2006

UPDATE: It seems that Google really heard us all, and has removed the Bollywood related content from the Google Video servers. I cannot seem to find any new movie lately. :-)

Does Google care about it? Bollywood is the informal name given to Indian Cinema. By the number of movies produced in a year, its way ahead of Hollywood. There are interesting comparisons with Hollywood here.

NonSense – AdSense – BadSense

Monday, December 19th, 2005

OK. I havent been this harsh on any of the services out there (though there are crappy services out there), but this one was too much. Not because it was a BIG issue, but because it came from a big company.

I had Google Ads being served up in my posts, just above the comment section. A small neat not in the face ad strip. For last 15 days I had been seeing that the only ads being served are targetting the keyword ‘blog‘. A quick search (on Google!) led me to the fact that it was my URL, www.emergintex.com/blog which was the culprit as AdSense was seeing that blog keyword in my URL and hence serving blog related ads.

After some looking around, I tried adding the sites being offered against blog keyword to my block list under Google AdSense, but the sucker kept on serving newer and newer blog related sites. I thought, ok let me try and remove the blog keyword from my URL. So, I moved my WordPress install to the root instead of root/blog. This didnt help a lot again (even after waiting for a day for the ads to refresh) and more than that, this way I would lose my Technorati rating, pointing to the old URI. Plus my feeds @ FeedBurner.

So I decided to axe the Google Ads. BottomLine. But the question is, WHY CANT GOOGLE give ways to BLOCK certain KEYWORDS ! Life would be simpler in that case.

Technorati

Wednesday, August 24th, 2005

I am soooo having issues with Technorati since last night. I am not able to see my account or watchlist after I log in. Once I hit the signin button, all I see is a blank page.
But if I browse to http://www.technorati.com/ping, I can see the page, but if I click on Account or Watchlist, I see nothing. Already filed 2 support requests, no reply yet.
Anyone knows about this, please comment here…
