Missing iPhone Features
Having used a iPhone for a week or so, I have been missing a lot of functionality, coming from a Windows Mobile device (WM6). I guess I have to face the reality that iPhone is still a multimedia (music & video) device first & then a phone or a productivity device.
The phone part as of now looks ok, with most of the basic features covered. Some basic functionality like transferring Contacts via OBEX using Bluetooth comes to haunt you sometimes. Rarely you will be missing the copy/paste functionality while adding contact information, or copying a contact information from a web-page in Safari and pasting it in the Contacts application.
- Office suite !!!
- Voice Dialing.
- Contact exchange from other devices over Bluetooth.
- Clipboard.
- Auto-Completion while dialing.
- Battery life !
While iPhone is a good multimedia device, it still lacks an office suite to compete against other productivity based devices. Getting your email is not complete unless you are able to act on those documents that come as attachment. Windows Mobile device certainly take the lead here. Not sure how GPhone would change the scene here, especially with recent announcement of Google Presentation, in addition to Google Docs.
No matter how big or slick the dialpad is on a mobile device, you **need** a voice dialer. Someone who is always on the road, needs to speak to the phone to dial his contacts, instead of scrolling.
A closed device, which would not talk to other devices to exchange information is an outcast in today’s world. iPhone needs to talk to other Nokia’s and WM’s to get (or send) some contact information.
Clipboard is something I am missing from day one on iPhone. Surfing in Safari, you see a contact information you need to transfer into Contacts, but you need to switch between the 2 and type the contact information. Give clipboard feature to us, so that we can just copy and paste between applications. Same goes for saving images from Safari to Camera-Roll.
Auto-completion is something I put in there, it may not be something which we miss very much, given that we get Voice Dialing.
How does everyone feel about the battery life on the phone. Even a day’s usage of just the phone part yields a half battery at the end of the day? For me its about 25% left after a day’s usage of just the phone part. If I jump onto Safari or iPod I see considerably drained battery by the end of the day. For me the unit tends to heat up too, even if I have Wi-Fi off, GPRS on, and on a voice call for 8-10 minutes.
